The Silver Tsunami Is Here — What It Means for Quincy-Area Business Owners

If you own a business in Quincy, Illinois — or anywhere in the Tri-State area — there's a good chance you've heard the phrase "silver tsunami" without knowing quite what it means for you. Here's the short version: roughly 51% of small business owners in the U.S. are Baby Boomers, and close to 60% of them plan to sell or exit their business within the next ten years. By 2035, an estimated six million small and mid-size businesses will be part of what industry researchers are calling the "great ownership transfer" — with roughly one million of those changing hands in transactions worth a combined $5 trillion.

That's not an abstract national statistic. It's the machine shop on the edge of town, the third-generation family distributor, the HVAC company that's been answering the same phone number since the 1980s. Quincy and the surrounding communities have exactly the kind of business base — manufacturing, agriculture-adjacent services, healthcare, home services, distribution — that this wave is going to hit hardest, because those are the industries Boomer owners built and still run.

Here's the part that should get every owner's attention: 72% of Boomer business owners do not have a formal, written succession plan. Only 19% have actually started exit planning, even though most of them expect to be out within a decade. That gap — between when owners plan to leave and how prepared they are to do it — is where businesses lose value, deals fall apart, or owners end up accepting far less than their company is worth simply because they ran out of runway.

What this means if you're the owner

A business is worth more when there's time to prepare it for sale — clean financials, a management team that doesn't depend entirely on you, diversified customers, documented processes. Buyers pay a premium for a business that can run without its founder in the room. They discount heavily, or walk away, from one that can't.

The good news is that preparation doesn't require you to be ready to sell tomorrow. A pre-valuation analysis — understanding what your business is worth today and what specifically would increase that number — is useful whether you plan to sell in one year or ten. It's the single most common thing we hear from owners after the fact: "I wish I'd started thinking about this sooner."

Roughly 70% of business owners say they'd prefer an internal transfer — to family, a partner, or employees — over selling to an outside buyer. That's a completely reasonable goal, but it takes just as much planning as a sale to a third party, sometimes more, since it usually involves financing structures and a longer transition timeline.
